JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

TITLE:             SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

           

To develop and implement an instructional program that will effectively provide the best possible education for each student.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

•           Hold a valid teacher license to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned;

•           Make knowledge accessible to all students;

•           Developing students’ cognitive capacity and respect for learning;

•           Fostering students’ self-esteem, motivation, and sense of civic responsibility;

•           Appropriate communication skills including a command of the English language and grammar skills.

 

REPORTS TO:             Principal

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Develop and implement effective models, strategies and techniques of instruction.

  2. Maintain classroom environment and climate which provide order andorganization yet promote development of student self-discipline and enhancement of student/teacher self-esteem.

  3. Become knowledgeable regarding the scope and sequence of the general school curriculum.

  4. Develop and use skills in adapting general school curriculum to meet the needs of students who have been determined disabled.

  5. Develop skills in implementing specific curriculum and techniques in area of assignment.

  6. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, parents, community agencies, and administration.

  7. Become knowledgeable regarding policies of the School System and the school or assignment.

  8. Become knowledgeable with and able to perform and interpret diagnostic measures necessary to special education assessment.

  9. Become familiar with general education evaluation procedure and find ways to adapt it to meet the needs of disabled learners.

  10. Learn to implement the role of case management.  (Seeing a student through the assessment procedure from referral to eligibility and program development.)

  11. Be prompt in all areas of reporting such as:

  1. Caseload rosters

  2. Surveys and required reports

  3. Notices and need for assessment

  4. Timeline maintenance

  1. Maintain professional growth through coursework, seminars, observations, conferences and reading.

  2. Maintain responsibility for validity and currency of credentials.

  3. Attend to other duties assigned by principal, department chairperson, superintendent or designee.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

     

                Two hundred day contract. The School Board will establish the salary annually.

     

    EVALUATION:

     

                Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation or licensed personnel.
