JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: ENGLISH LEARNER (EL) TEACHER
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The English Learner (EL) Teacher will provide specialized instruction to students identified as English Learners (ELs) to help them develop English language proficiency and succeed in the academic environment. This position requires expertise in English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional strategies and compliance with federal and state regulations for EL services. The EL Teacher will collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and families to ensure that EL students receive the necessary support to achieve academic success.
QUALIFICATIONS and WORKING CONDITIONS:
Holds a professional license with a teaching endorsement at the appropriate level;
Demonstrates professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and members of the community;
Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day if assigned to an itinerant position;
Ability to monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior, including outdoor activity areas, gymnasiums, etc;
Possesses high moral standards and integrity;
Competent in the use of instructional technology hardware and software;
Frequent walking, standing, stopping, lifting up to 60 pounds may be required; and
It is anticipated that some stress will be associated with this position. It is necessary that the individual have the capacity to remain calm, considerate, and tactful.
REPORTS TO:
Building Principal/or a designee and EL Program Coordinator
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Comply with school and School Board policy and regulations.
- Administer language proficiency assessments (e.g., WIDA ACCESS) to evaluate and monitor students' English language development.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Individual Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) for EL students and collaborate with other educational professionals to provide accommodations.
- Collaborate with school administrators and the EL Program Coordinator to maintain accurate student records and ensure proper placement of EL students.
- Provide translation or interpretation services as needed, or facilitate access to these services for parents.
- Work cooperatively with the total staff.
- Relate positively to parents and other community representatives.
- Demonstrate professional growth.
- Be prompt and accurate with required reports and records.
- Demonstrate command of Standard English, both spoken and written.
- Accept responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to school.
- Use instructional and planning time effectively.
- Assume responsibility of care of materials, equipment and facilities.
- Assume responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to the teacher’s care.
- Practice and promote positive interaction with and among students.
- Demonstrate interest in the students, encourage self-direction and self-motivation in students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the subject being taught.
- Maintain an organized program of instruction based on long range plans.
- Exhibit evidence of effective lesson plans.
- Utilize appropriate and varied teaching techniques and learning activities.
- Communicate lesson objectives and their importance to students.
- Demonstrate ability to adjust presentation of subject content to students’ needs and interest.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Administration.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month contract, exempted FLSA status. Salary will be established annually by the School Board.
EVALUATION:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board Policy and administrative regulations and evaluation of personnel.
