Title: Director of Instruction

 

Primary Function: To provide oversight of all regular K-12 education instructional programs and curriculum development.

 

Qualifications: Hold a Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in administration or supervision.
Have a minimum of five years of experience in public education, two of which in administration.
Possess professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and
members of the community at large.

 

Reports To: Chief of Teaching, Learning and Support Services

 

Supervises:
Administrative Assistant for the Office of Instruction
Reading Specialist/Coaches
Math Specialists/Coaches

 

Performance Responsibilities:
1. Provide oversight of the implementation, development and publication of the local curriculum.
2. Provide oversight of the implementation of the Virginia Standards of Learning.
3. Report to the School Board regrading State and Federal Accreditation.
4. Provide leadership for a system of strategic planning for the purposes of school improvement that
includes the interpretation of data, the development of a continuous school improvement plan, and
monitoring school progress.
5. Assist the Division Director of Testing as needed.
6. Provide oversight of the fine arts program.
7. Ensure that all instructional programs are in compliance with federal, state and local policies.
8. Serve as the compliance officer in cases involving sexual and/or racial harassment.
9. Provide oversight of the division’s dual enrollment, early scholar’s and Governor’s School program.
10. Provide oversight of all federal programs with the exception of special education and CTE.
11. Provide oversight of the division’s reading program
12. Provide oversight of the family life education program.
13. Provide oversight of the library/media program.
14. Coordinate the development and implementation of the Algebra Readiness program.
15. Provide oversight of the textbook adoption and procurement process.
16. Provide oversight of the implementation of all remedial programs, including summer school.
17. Manages implementation of the Virginia Literacy Plan.
18. Coordinate professional development for instructional personnel.
19. Assist with the division’s mentoring program.
20. Develop the division staff plan based upon pupil enrollment and instructional requirements.
21. Provides oversight of the teacher evaluation system.
22. Provides oversight of kindergarten orientation.
23. Coordinates the division spelling bee.
24. Participate in district level advisory committees.
25. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Chief of Teaching, Learning and Support

 

Services Terms of Employment:
Twelve-month contract with salary to be established annually by the school board.

It is also anticipated that some stress will be associated with this position primarily due to deadlines and irregular
workflow. It is necessary that the individual have the capacity to remain calm, considerate and tactful.
